Susan Locke Charlesworth is an enrolled member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. Her Choctaw ancestors were removed from Mississippi on the Trail of Tears. Self-taught in the patterns of patterns of the Choctaw Nation baskets, Susan learned by studying pictures of traditional baskets as well as examining vintage baskets. She takes pride in weaving the traditional twill patterns as accurately as possible. Choctaw basketry is part of a larger, distinctive and highly unified tradition of Southeastern Indian basketry. Susan learned how to process and weave baskets in river cane from the late Emma Garrett, a full blood Cherokee weaver. The difficulty of obtaining cane and securing transportation to and from the cane areas has been a significant factor in the decrease of weavers of traditional basketry. Consequently, Susan now weaves with commercial reed and cane. Susan has entered award winning baskets in the Choctaw Nation Annual Art Show since 2005. She has also entered the Eiteljorg Museum Indian Market and Festival, showing 1rst Place award winning baskets 2010 - 2019.

This Diamond Twill Market Basket won First Place in the category "Artist Duplicate" at the 2015 Eiteljorg Museum Indian Market and Festival. The basket's blue ribbon from the festival is included with your purchase.
