Artist: Shirley M. (Reichard) Brauker/Go-gee-zis muckwa (Moon Bear)

Tribe: Odawa

Shirley Brauker belongs to the Odawa tribe of Coldwater, Michigan. Her Odawa name is Go-gee-zis muckwa, or Moon Bear. She spent her entire life learning about art and her Native American heritage. She combined these two interests into her own unique style of art. Shirley uses images from her cultural background as well as her imagination to create pieces that reflect the way she sees the world around her. Some ideas come from text books, others come from stories passed down by her mother, while others are born from her own experiences.

Shirley received a Masters and Bachelors of Fine Arts Degree from Central Michigan University and a PhD from CMU after presenting the Commencement Address for the 2015 Graduation Ceremony. Exhibiting her art gives her the opportunity to explain her work and the stories behind the designs. The Eiteljorg Museum Indian Market and Festival is among the places Shirley has exhibited her work. At these exhibitions, people enjoy seeing Shirley's art and hearing about how the work was created and the things that influenced it.
