Artist: Edwin Mighell

Tribe: Inupiat

Edwin Mighell is a Native American ex-engineer living in Anchorage, Alaska. He uses glacial clay from the Cook Inlet mudflats to make his own clay tiles. The Inupiaq people near Point Hope had a long history of collecting and using local clay in their pottery, although the tradition died off around 1880. Edwin says that knowing that he is reviving an old art form gives him a sense of connection to his Inupiaq heritage. As he learns more about his Inupiaq heritage, Edwin has begun to incorporate images from many of their myths. He is also drawn to Alaskan images, particularly birds and plants native to the Point Hope area, sometimes imprinting the plant directly into the clay.
