Artist: Mary Tafoya

Tribe: Santa Domingo Pueblo

Mary Tafoya grew up in a traditional family in Santa Domingo Pueblo and uses skills she gained by helping her parents string and design traditional Santa Domingo jewelry. Her jewelry evolved from traditional Santa Domingo turquoise "heishi" and "Depression Era" work to modern, contemporary, mosaic, multi-colored inlay jewelry that is versatile for formal and casual wear. She uses natural stones, shells, and turquoise from different areas of the United States intricately inlaid together. She describes her style as "free form inlay where no two pieces are alike as each stone, shell or turquoise is cut to fit a design right out of my memory." Currently, Mary lives with her husband Lorenzo (also a jeweler/metalsmith) and four children. She loves giving tours of her studio, which is situated on the Santa Domingo Pueblo. An in-demand artist at both galleries and art shows, Mary shows her work regularly at the Eiteljorg Museum Indian Market & Festival.
